I went to go see this last night expecting on great things. It’s supposed to be a new Batman. And that’s what we got in this movie. Starring Cedrick Digory and Jason Momoa’s daughter as the Bat and the Cat, under the direction of Mat Reeves, we get a very involved Gotham. Unlike the Dark Knight trilogy where regular ass people either tend to be in the way, or they’re the damsel in distress, this movie completely involves the city and it’s corruption. The inclusion of Falcone was fun because he’s a character that just has so much power and say. Watching Batman deal with these new relationships he’s building because he’s only been doing this for two years, is very fulfilling. You can feel the passion and urgency of this Batman. The Batman that’s making mistakes and having to fix them is also a nice change of pace. The very vulnerable feeling these characters give is almost inviting us to want to learn more about them later such as Penguin who we only see so much of. And I have to say Riddler is the best part of the movie. It was clear they read some comics and played some games, the inclusion of these followers who come to fight for any given villain who has a manifesto of some kind that includes hating Batman, is just fucking sick. It gives Batman more problems and the villains time to create more conflict. It’s a win win because the movie ends at some point with a W obviously but we’ll get to that. The Riddler was my favorite because of the similarities it showed between Riddler and QAnon. It’s not the exact same, and a lot of the reasons for riddler doing what he’s doing is silly, but social commentary is spot on. And it’s more an idea that’s just kinda there and not in your face, but I think stuff like that is sick. The way Batman isn’t just depressed, but clearly is trying to work through things and this is his coping mechanism. The scene where Riddler and Batman talk is interesting because it reveals a huge fuck up on the Bats part, but the psychological back and forth just feels real. It’s says alot about mental health, the things we do to try and cope, and the ways we defend it. I found this Batman to be very hopefully rather than just depressed. And he was obviously still depressed, but I think he did a better job of actually acting depressed rather than just acting depressed because you’re supposed to like Christian Bale did. Cat woman was cool and kinda useless half the time. That’s not to say it’s a bad thing. But they tried tying too many things together that didn’t, and for me as a Batman fan I was thrown off, but I don’t have any real beef with it. Catwoman as a character can only grow at this point. Pattison is also my favorite Batman right now. He looked like a menace to society when he was fighting. He was taking shotgun blasts, driving through explosions, was being an actual detective, we got to watch him stalk people, so much can be said. But I think what he handles best is how he sees people treat him with and without the mask. And getting to see that was really cool too. Being that this Gotham is more involved and we stayed there this time around, watching him walk into the same buildings as both Bruce and the Bat was super cool and excellent acting. The fight scenes were also just super lovely. They removed that awful super fast, blurry, up close filming style and stuck with a more general shot that just looks really nice. The rave right scene was cool seeing the strobes and different poses while fighting. Something about it just made me super happy and wish more people thought like that. Like I said I think once we got to the parts where Riddler was telling everyone why he was doing what he was it started doing cool things in stupid way. Involving more of their parents past, mostly that. The he said she said game was also really silly, but the scene with Falcone was still really powerful. I really loved the colors too. Black and red was just a nice touch. The ending wasn’t bad it just alluded to things I hope I don’t have to see for another while because I want a movie with Dr. Freeze in it haha. But this is the best Batman movie ever right now. Besides sore of the cartoon ones. 9/10 bye
