This movie was nominated for an Oscar. And out of most of the Oscar nominations I hadn’t seen, this seemed the most up my alley. And I was right. Packed with emotions and different perspectives of life. A beautiful story best told through implication. And this movie does it really well. The parts where you hear what he hears is the most powerful moments to me. He’s such a pure character the whole time. Looking for a solution, a way out, while having the support he needs and a mentor to offer the new perspective he needed to reach this new normalcy he’d had to learn to live with eventually. The tension throughout is so present. You can feel yourself being lost and empathizing with the main character’s decisions. You also find yourself being enlightened by his mentor also who introduces you to the lifestyle of a deaf person and how it’s not terribly different from normal life. I found myself genuinely wanting to cry at certain moments being a drummer myself and putting myself in his imaginary shoes not being able to listen to music ever again. It’s heartbreaking all the way through. It’s powerful though and I walked away learning more about what it’s like to be deaf or at least gained a new perspective on disabilities generally. I very much enjoyed this. It’s not perfect, it’s not ground breaking. But fuck did I love this movie.
