Yeah this movie is pretty amazing. I had already written pretty much a whole review for this and it deleted so I’ll keep it brief. I enjoyed the plot although in moments it felt like a lot. And not in ways you’ll think just wait. I’ll start with the plot actually. The ever evolving story of what happens after Harry steals his mom’s TV is truly tragic, heartbreaking, and some how wholesome. It’s portrayals of drug use/addiction, isolation, eating disorders, mental illness, depression, desperation, it has kinda all of it. And yet it does most of it in a way that feels believable and wholesome. You really feel for characters like Tyrone who could’ve had a lot going for them. Along with Marion with the wealth in her family that she wasted on drugs with Harry. Throughout its rocky and endearing. Especially the mother’s story. Where she finds herself unknowingly falling into the same trap her son has. Drugs. It was heartbreaking to see a well intentioned woman turn into an obsessive addict that turned into schizophrenia? The scenes where she ends up going to the hospital are just gut wrenching. I hope that lady got an Oscar. But Marlon Wayan as Tyrone was really cool. Thinking that’s the same guy in Scary Movie is nuts. His performance is incredible and super emotional. I probably wouldn’t have given him an Oscar but maybe a nomination because shit had me fucked up for a good minute with the limo scene. The ultimate ending where Harry ends up getting his arm amputated after an infected heroin wound got bad was rather emotional too. Marion eventually becoming a prostitute has some pretty out there scenes I didn’t think I’d actually see in a film. It’s hard writing some of it because some of it I can relate to without so much of the ugliness. This is if everything went wrong. And not even, because the editing always for moments to play scenes characters are seeing in their heads. Providing much worse things that could happen, but too absurd to for the film. The editing and vfx is actually incredible. There’s a few scenes I’d actually call “outdated” but even then those are very few shots. The scene where the people teleport from Harry’s mom’s TV actually blew my mind. Most mom moments freaked me the hell out. The cinematography got really disturbing at times with shots that just add to the feeling of confusion and isolation that any given character is feeling. Tyrone has a few prison/jail scenes that have similar vibes with wisps of shadows passing behind him as he’s peering out the prison bars almost ready to beg to get out and see his friends. The time lapse effect was also used ALOT but well. I’m missing alot of things, but I’m also rambling. This movie is incredible and sad. Don’t watch this is you’re not into fils that’ll challenge you emotionally.
