This was a show I watched when I was like 7 or something maybe 8 and remember this movie being the creepiest and scariest shit I’ve seen. I had nightmares about this show for years. Several years pass and it pops up in my brain and haven’t stopped thinking about it since. Mostly out of curiosity to see if it was as crazy as I remember it being. Only today was I able to find a way to watch it and did some other research on it as well. This thing has Neil Gaiman’s name all over the damn thing from writing the novel, and graphic novel, to writing and producing this series and it shows because wow. The characters are phenomenal and almost whimsical while still being extremely terrifying. The underworld concept Gaiman brought to the table with this piece is so original and captivating and I don’t feel like I know enough about it and wanna what all happens in Underground London. Richard’s character development is very genuine too. His transition from trying to live up to these expectation that ultimately make him unhappy to finding a place in this other world that he would’ve never dreamed of. And during his adventures in the beginning you feel the fever dream effect Richard is feeling because it gets so different so fast but it feels real and it feels so thoughtfully done. Not to mention the visuals make you feel like it’s a dream. The scenery is always so odd, dangerous, spooky, empty, crowded, or something crazy almost like you’re reading a graphic novel. Huge props to the director for those beautiful shots and doing what they did for what little budget they had. I don’t wanna ruin or spoil anything but it’s such an experience that I think was ahead of its time. While I wish they maybe waited later to adapt it in a time like this with the tech we have it’d look great but this is perfect and I don’t need anything besides this. Do I wish there was more to this story? Yeah, but I think thats what makes Neil Gaiman as good as he is, he’s very good at making you wondering what happened after they went back down? Do I think this is perfect? Pretty damn close. I’m gonna watch all of them again right now actually.
