I only watched the first three episodes and stopped because I couldn’t. If you read my How I Met Your Mother review then this is happening quite literally after that. Came on after I finished the last episode and saw Anna Ferris. Who I recently watched in Smiley Face and totally adored. That movie got a solid review from me and still does. This show gets a three for some pretty fundamental reasons. In terms of it being a sitcom, there’s hardly any conflict. Besides the constant inner conflict the main character constantly plays like a reverse card in UNO. Even then they don’t amount to much these first few episodes. Following a single mom with two kids who didn’t finish high school to be a waitress instead of a psychologist like she wanted. Whether that’s something that comes up later in the show or not doesn’t matter to me really. It seems like every character in this show has an issue with their education despite the level of education you have. It shoots itself in the foot with the “history repeating itself” or better called “that’s definitely my kid” as her teenage daughter gets pregnant from one of the most one dimensional characters on the show, but it seems men have that particular role in this show maybe. Gotta say that one line from the chef about the cheerleader was kinda gross unless I misinterpreted it. Leading into his writing was a red flag for me. I know Chuck Lorre is quite literally a legend at this point. Cranking out sitcoms like rabbits make babies. Currently he has 4-5 shows on the air and one on Netflix as the time of this being posted. Even with all that street credit the jokes are nothing more than drug and sex jokes that don’t really land because we’ve heard most of it already. The drug references are probably the worst part. “No I didn’t take your Xanax from your purse” is just not that funny to me in any context. It’s takes the easy way of quick wittedness that made Big Bang Theory as stale as it’s become now. The difference really being that Big Bang at least had a certain culture to it. Everyone had their rituals and way of doing things. You don’t get that here. You see Anna’s character at work then go home. Sometimes an AA meeting or whatever. And it’s just that over and over again. “Hey teenage daughter of mine don’t get pregnant, when I got pregnant that young it ruined my life.” Funny how all of a sudden I’m the next episode her daughter is now pregnant. WHO WOULDA THUNK IT. Sometimes predictability can be satisfying. Like in End Game where you watch Thanos die. Didn’t think it was gonna happen like that that soon, but you still saw it coming. Something happens and then someone just leaves like it didn’t until the next episode where now there’s a different problem. I underhand that’s kind of the point of sitcoms, my issue is where is the conflict? There’s not motive or determination in these characters. They all kind of just fuck off and around in their own ways. Especially when you’re in the house with them. I don’t know, this show just wasn’t great. It’s your standard sitcom but with more drug and sex jokes. Drug and sex jokes that don’t add anything and aren’t funny because it normally doesn’t relate to the topic half the time. Anna Ferris at this point is my favorite stoner actor person to watch, so to see her make these pretty lame jokes about not taking Xanax, hate my mom, tryna be a better mom, DONT HAVE SEX. It all just looks odd to watch. Anna clearly outdoes everyone else in the show, but the writing is just not great. Maybe I’ll watch more in the future but right now it gets a three. I’m not very impressed but it’s manageable to watch.
