What can I say? This series is a lot of firsts for me. Spoilers ahead so don’t read this. This series is based around a woman’s adventure as a young filmmaker. Constantly testing the limits of how far she will go to get her way. Right away you notice Alita Battle Angel playing the lead role. Before I get into what I think about what happened in the plot, it’s important for me to acknowledge the bar this series is creating for future Netflix series that plan to go a similar route. Fear Street and their three installments for me also set this bar with the gore, story telling, acting, cinematography. Brand New Cherry Flavor quite literally takes the cake. It pushes the boundaries of what kinds of stories can be told on screen. Sexual assault, drugs, killing, witch craft, are all things we’ve seen before. You could probably argue at this point Netflix has a thing for witchcraft movies at the moment. So how is this different? For me it was the puking kittens, but honestly beyond that the acting and cinematography is absolutely on another level. You immediately become invested in this constant feeling of suspense. Things happen you quite literally wouldn’t expect them too. Besides witch craft and the woman protagonist being bisexual, every other part about this movie is completely unpredictable. I saw things on screen I’ve never seen before and can never unsee it. I screamed a few times. I’m comparing this to Fear Street because of the parallels that are really easy to draw. Which is not a complaint by any means, I think in fact this movie did a far better job of challenging the audience in an artistic way. When puking kittens and side pussy come on the screen what do you do? Nothing besides watch it or don’t. Those who chose to watch it can see the value in that concept alone and the story that’s being told. You’re also left confused unless you’re Sherlock Holmes. Half the time this show leaves you confused and unsure of what’s happened. I’m sure after a few viewings I’ll see more hints and such. It’s all just so beautiful to look at. It’s clear these people knew what they were making was special. And the best version of whatever Netflix had to offer. And in the grand scheme of things, this is just another witch craft thing with a bi protagonist. I’m telling you this is the best one. I think the title Brand New Cherry Flavor describes this experience quite well. 10/10 I haven’t seen anything like this since I Think You Should Leave. Which is another 10/10 for me I believe. If you liked that movie you’ll like this show, vice versa. The passion is present. And you can’t really ask for much more when this is what that creates. I’m such a huge fan. I hope it stops there. A second season would be cool, BUT I’m not even sure where it’d go from there. It leaves it open for another season though so only time will tell I suppose. In the credits it also referred to it being based off of a novel. So I might check that out and see if that changes my opinion in any way. Anyways WATCH THIS BUT NOT WITH YOU PARENTS YOU WILL HATE THAT YOU LOVE THIS SHOW BUT YOU WILL ALSO BE HAPPY YOU GOT TO SEE THAT FOR A FIRST TIME. I’m truly jealous if those that get to watch this for the first time.
