I really enjoyed this movie for a lot of reasons. I went in with low expectations after the Spider-Man movie being as fan servicy and cartoony as it was. I didn’t want that in this movie. Happy to report I got what I wanted pretty much. The villain was masterfully written. The MCU now has all of these things to pull and reference from and I’m really glad that didn’t get overused. Every moment where you feel context is needed, you’re provided with enough information to be understand what’s happening. Going and watching shows like Wandavision will absolutely provide more context on the emotions of specific characters, their motives, and how we got to where we are. Strange was a really fun hero to watch and was easily the best part of the movie. The growth you see Strange go through in this movie is more impactful than ever some of the Spider-Man films. The VFX was very well comped and executed too. Do I wish we saw more spell variations rather than just a bunch of projectiles? Yes, but even Harry Potter had this issue. It’s not even an issue when you think about the contrast of the power different powers colliding. And a movie that’s about problem solving only has so much time for creative endeavors that we still get to see in small doses. This will win best VFX Oscar is Avatar doesn’t come out this year. Now onto my least favorite parts. America Chavez. I hate this character. She’s the Sakura of this movie. Doesn’t do anything besides conveniently just have the ability to travel across different universes when lever she’s about to get killed by something. Which I thought was really stupid because that’s the only reason she was kept around. There was a moment where you see her memory play out of the first time she made the portal freaking out losing both of her mothers because of it. And all because a bee landed on her hand. It was so stupid. Her dialogue added nothing to the film besides stating the obvious the whole time. Which was already apparent if you have eyes and able to comprehend things. And her ending bothered me even more because I feel like we’re going to see more of her and I really don’t want that. The ending in general was bad. Strange’s second to last fight scene with bizzarro version of himself uses sheet music and it’s cool, but it takes up almost the whole fight and that’s all the creativity they had? What else was in the room that you can do that too? And I’m all for an homage to Fantasia in Doctor Strange, but not in the middle of a fight. After that ends the villain has this moment of self reflection that just causes them to give up entirely? After seeing how the villain is able to pretty much do whatever, how does this one thing not send them into a rage fit. But I enjoyed how the movie questions the morals of hopping universes or even possessing a you from a different universe. That’s something even Everything Everywhere All At Once didn’t even try to explain or question. Doctor Strange did alot of those things right but I just hated America Chavez. I don’t even know why she was in the movie. If it’s for representation reasons they could’ve done a better job. I’ve never felt so conflicted. Because I really enjoy the parts of the movie that are great. But the parts I hate really irritate me. I’m giving it a 6 because I think this is the best MCU film to date. Adjusting my other scores later too because of it. While the ending is disappointing at best, it’s enjoyable and most won’t even notice probably.
