A focus on the students rather than their antics humanizes a cast of characters that could have too easily fallen into tropes very quickly. The realization that drives the film also helps highlight the complexity of a group of people that seems to be lumped into categories and overlooked due to those cliques they form. Each individual seems to get a moment to highlight the depth of the person even if each character isn’t fully fleshed out, which makes you feel the weight of the inciting incident’s revelation. I think it’s a movie that will resonate with young audiences because while the answer is a little too tidy for real life, it’s honest to those feelings that come with graduation and self actualization and everything that comes with graduating from high school.
