As far as MCU movies go, this one is supremely underrated. Shane Black’s run at Iron Man/Tony Stark was the first time a director was really given the chance to implement a vision of their own, and you can see the fruits of that in this film. It feels like a Shane Black film (Christmas and all), which keeps everything fresh. It may feel weird in context of the larger canon, but the film is a win. The themes play out gratuitously (with a blood toxicity subplot that goes nowhere), but this is actually a boon for the (then) emerging genre.
