Holy fu*k, 'Malcolm & Marie' on Netflix is so underrated! This is by far the most underrated film I’ve watched in a while. I genuinely don’t understand how many are saying that this movie sucks.
I can’t say I’ve given a round of applause in my room, alone, after finishing any other film that released in the past year.
Lets just say we have our first contender for the big ten of the year in 2021 because this movie is an experience.
This is a film I'm nervous to write about. I think Sam Levinson as a director & screenwriter is so above me in a way that he and Malcolm could laugh at me even for my positive review.
This film plays as a feature-length version of the fight in 'Marriage Story' or even 'Before Midnight' and it is absolutely as riveting as it's emotionally exhausting. There’s so many excellent scenes driven by just the acting and the dialogue and it was immensely satisfying to watch. Both the characters are so well written and have so much nuances and there’s so much depth to 'em that is slowly revealed throughout all their conversations!
This is so deeply personal to me in so many more ways than one. I hope it goes the distance and makes a difference, that it wins every competitive award (nominated for the 26th Critics Choice Awards for Best Actress so far)... but if it doesn’t that’s okay. I know it’ll always be there for me.
I cried twice during this, once during Zendaya's bathtub scene, and once when I realised James Corden (of 'The Prom') and Kate Hudson (of 'Music') got nominated for the 78th Golden Globes over John David Washington and Zendaya. THAT represents everything that's wrong with the Globes nepotism.
After watching 'Sound of Metal', 'Minari', 'Nomadland' and 'Soul' in December last, I wondered if there would be yet another film in 93rd The Academy Award race that would even come close to being as masterfully crafted and emotionally poignant. While there have been some truly great films released throughout 2020, those were the only four I felt comfortable calling flawless, that is until I saw Sam Levinson's absolutely astounding 'Malcolm & Marie'.
"Thank you!"
