I believe the greatest achievement here is how it's able to make you question your urge to strangle both the young and the old characters in equal measure: referring, of course, to Mary Tilford (Karen Balkin) and Lily Mortar (Miriam Hopkins), respectively, the former as violent an embodiment of psychopathic narcissism as I've ever seen in a child on screen and the latter exhibiting a nerve-grating fusion of judgementalism, nosy poking, and indolence. Even the few bouts of young-girl-shrieking that reach unbridled, melodramatic highs contain a sobering amount of truth to 'em, because let's face it: kids with motives can be such little shits. Have you ever wanted to spank a little girl in the arse?
If you didn't answer in affirmative, watch this classic and ask yourself that question again.
