Eyes of Wakanda is a interesting take on the MCU, expanding more history within Wakanda but in earlier times. 4 separate stories throughout the series that ends up connecting at the end in what I see is a big way in the timeline of black panther.
Episode 1 starts a bit shakey with learning about what is going on and how will this show be important and how these characters are significant. We get one character name Noni who appears to be on a mission to take down “the lion” and his empire. She does this in a badass way like intense fight scenes, bruises and deaths which is a big step up in marvel animation ever since X-men 97 and Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman. The episode ends up with Noni getting a Wakanda artifact that starts up the series of war dog warriors/spies set out to collect vibranium artifacts. There was also similar historical parallels between the lion and MCU history like Killmonger’s beliefs and Hydra’s goals in the 2014 winter soldier movie.
Episode 2 is perhaps my favorite out of the 4 mostly because of the intertwine of the Trojan war story in Greece which is one of my favorite history stories involving Greece. Everyone knows of the war that the Greek tried to invade the city of Troy and did that with the Trojan horse by using it as a decoy to hide the Greek warriors in and give the horse as a gift to Troy as a sign of surrender. So when they get inside, they sneak out and kill the warriors of Troy. This episodes keeps that idea with Achilles and Wakanda war dog Memnon who start off as close friends throughout the war but end up fighting one another because Memnon needed to complete his solo mission for Wakanda to getting the artifact which is a Wakanda necklace no matter what. Ending of the episode is also nice as we connect Memnon and older Noni who talk bout their mission and how much it impacted their lives and figuring out who they are and how much they give to Wakanda.
Episode 3 takes place 2500 years after episode 2 where we are in China and we get our first MCU mention and debut of the legendary: IRON FIST. Not Danny from the Netflix shows, a different iron fist character. We also get Basha the next war dog mission to retrieve a Wakandan artifact in a China temple which looked easy but opened a whole can of worms between him and the iron fist character who had incredible fight scenes that gave Shang chi vibes. Episode itself with these 2 was funny in a way especially at the end with a simple solution with truth but episode 2 is more impactful with the betrayal of friends.
Now episode 4 which is set in 1896 and is the finale of this season where they tie all lose ends we have a war dog name Kuda and prince of Wakanda name Tafari where it’s all about sacrifice personal glory to save the future of Wakanda and this was done in a big MCU way. How they do this is by retrieving a Wakandan artifact but this one is the axe that we have seen in the black panther movie that killmonger steals in a museum. Seeing that in this show highlights the continuity of the show to movie if you really know the movies and was great seeing how they use the axe as a way to balance the timeline and set things right for the future which would be the black panther movie and beyond that of Wakanda. We also have the futuristic black panther coming back in time to set things right and warn Kuda & Tafari about the future and what makes this finale interesting is that this black panther, in her ghost mode that allows her to be invisible, was traveling throughout history including the 3 episodes prior to this one that she was there scanning the previous artifacts to see if they were important and led to the ace being the significant one. It was nice seeing how the episodes connected one after another and led to this moment and soon led to “the forgotten son of Wakanda finds that axe” which is MCU Killmonger seeing the MCU events of Black Panther and beyond.
Overall, eyes of Wakanda was a breath of fresh air and mix of historical learning of history and more knowledge of Wakanda. For me my list from best episode to worst would be 2, 4, 3 and 1. Wish we actually got more episode in the season as it was pretty good and were released 1 day at a time instead of all at once. The black panther and MCU saga might be the best story arc that the MCU has and I’m sure we will continue to learn more in the future. WAKANDA FOREVER and R.I.P. Chadwick Boseman. 🙏🏽🤍💜🖤✊🏾
